Biographical sketch and research interests

I am a Ph.D. candidate in Political Science at Michigan State University. I study American politics and research methods, with a substantive focus on the United States Supreme Court. My research broadly focuses on how external actors — attorneys, litigants, and the United States government — influence Supreme Court decision making. More specifically, my dissertation examines how attorneys use the legal arguments outlined in their merits briefs to win cases. To do this, I utilize supervised machine learning techniques to analyze briefs and the attorneys who wrote them. Outside of my dissertation work, I am also interested in Supreme Court confirmation hearings, particularly senator behavior during the hearings, as well as strategy in the Office of the Solicitor General.
