Biographical sketch and research interests

Ae sil is a Ph.D. candidate in Political Science at the University of California, Merced. Her current research interests focus on domestic conflict and legislative institutions in dictatorships. Her work examines the relationship between oppositional collective dissents and the structural designs of a legislative institution. For example, her newly published first-authored paper in the Journal of Politics highlights the heterogeneity in opposition groups and shows the differential effect of opposition’s legislature membership on collective dissent. Her dissertation examines how dictators address the tradeoff between establishing a more inclusive legislative process and running a risk of passing unwanted legislation. She develops a formal tool to conceptualize a legislative process as a whole and also its variation. Using spatial models, she shows that legislative processes that allocate power to members of the opposition can produce similar policy outcomes as those produced via processes where dictators monopolize legislative power.
